Would you attend a PlurkCON?

PlurkCONAfter yesterdays highly successful PlurkCAST I got to thinking about the implications of social networking via Plurk. Plurk is new and just starting to heat up, and I personally believe it will transform in to a far more interactive community than Facebook or Twitter, or any other social network platform. The system is ripe for growth, and has plenty of room for new features and applications. It wouldn’t be difficult at all for Plurk to implement much more in depth social profiles, and they’ve only touched the tip of the ice berg with regards to networking tools.

We’ve heard of meet-ups, right? Heck, I’ve been to a few. We see social networking/new media conferences happening all over the world, but for the most part these are high dollar events that tend to ignore the majority of social networking communities.

Here is my question to you… and this might be a tad ambitious.. but hey I’m an ambitious kind of guy. What if in 2009 there was a PlurkCON? A national gathering of Plurkers and social networking junkies? I’m talking two full days of networking, social media panels, workshops, parties, etc. What if we were able to find sponsors to put on an entire event? And to keep the pricing low, we could even do it as a not-for-profit event.

If this were made a reality, would you try and attend?

Would it help my karma? I think it would have to be in Canada.

I’m sure it would help indirectly. :-)

Location is kind of important, don’t you think? Try out a few big cities that have lots of plurkers to start, might be one way to go with it..

With the right organization and leadership behind it, I think it’s entirely possibly to host such an event. Afterall, look at all the blogging conferences that go on.

The hardest part to nail down, IMO, would be the topics and sessions at the event. Currently, Plurk is a fairly small part of the much larger social web, which could make for a limited amount of activities. You never really know until you try it out.

I do like @NowSourcing’s idea about trying out some smaller events in areas where there are already a lot of Plurkers. Then if those go well, maybe organize one giant event.

Would be great if you made it in conjunction with another convention of similar nature.

Look at the top eight users by Karma. They are from seven different nations. What does this tell you about your idea of a “National” meetup?

Look at the principles of Plurk, particularly the “think globally, act globally” one, but also “move beyond fubu”.

One central convention is just plain not Plurky, particularly in a tourism-hostile country. Better would be to use meetup.com or somesuch to organise regional meetings, then a *global* meetup, with all the regions of each nation meeting centrally.

That’s the minimum you’d need, to be Plurky. You could go further, like organise feeds to and from each major location, so each room in location A can see what is happening in the related room in location B, and vice versa. Or at least for the main lecture hall. Let people give global talks and lectures from any region, and *take questions* from any other region… perhaps via Plurk.
