I dont know if they should upgrade them or not. Things like this may have it draw back especially for facilities management professionals who use Plurk in their day to day activities such as building maintenance, electrical and mechanical engineering jobs and serching for vacancies within London and UK. FM careers may not like it?

There's now a Private tab next to My Plurks (just below the timeline) that will show you All or New Private Plurks that you're part of. You don't really need any email notifications. Anytime you open the plurk page, the notification is right there on the Private tab (the number indicates the new responses on any of your private plurks).

Granted, you can only check if there's a response to your private plurk when you have your Plurk page opened. But most plurkers I know keep their Plurk pages open all day long, so... I don't really see the problem here.

Having them a different colour would likely solve the problem. Or maybe adding a "star" to ones for your eyes only would probably solve the whole problem...
