After yesterdays highly successful PlurkCAST I got to thinking about the implications of social networking via Plurk. Plurk is new and just starting to heat up, and I personally believe it will transform in to a far more interactive community than Facebook or Twitter, or any other social network platform. The system is ripe for growth, and has plenty of room for new features and applications. It wouldn’t be difficult at all for Plurk to implement much more in depth social profiles, and they’ve only touched the tip of the ice berg with regards to networking tools.
We’ve heard of meet-ups, right? Heck, I’ve been to a few. We see social networking/new media conferences happening all over the world, but for the most part these are high dollar events that tend to ignore the majority of social networking communities.
Here is my question to you… and this might be a tad ambitious.. but hey I’m an ambitious kind of guy. What if in 2009 there was a PlurkCON? A national gathering of Plurkers and social networking junkies? I’m talking two full days of networking, social media panels, workshops, parties, etc. What if we were able to find sponsors to put on an entire event? And to keep the pricing low, we could even do it as a not-for-profit event.
If this were made a reality, would you try and attend?

Bad news… if you’re not already on the top Plurk user list, you’re going to have a very difficult time ever getting there. In fact, it might be next to impossible thanks to the new Karma ALGO.
There are two major flaws to the top Plurk user list.
1) It’s based on Karma
Without an official Plurk API, Karma is really all there is to go on now, unfortunately. I’m not in any way bashing on Ryan Lim, who has done a killer job putting the top user list together, especially considering the data he had to work with. But, it is what it is… a top user list based on Karma is just downright wrong.

Giving credit where it’s due. Plurk really does listen to the user base from my experience. Hear some gripes going through plurkistan and before long you’ll see a photo of th A-team.
You can now add live links with custom anchor to your plurk profile.

What do I think of this? First I think it’s awesome because I spend a lot of time on plurk and now when people come to see my profile which ~900 have so far they can also go directly to my site if they wish.
I do think it will get insanely abused though and they would be smart to make that one of the rewards for reaching say 25 karma. People complain about spam all the time but one of the best things to do is prevent it. If you need karma of 25 or above your average spammer will never reach that based on the new algorithm. Furthermore if you were a spammer would you waste your time building up a profile at a social network when you could go elsewhere with less hassle?

We’re strongly considering a weekly PlurkCAST, which would happen live over Skype with streaming video on Ustream. Would this be of interest to you as a Plurker? If so, what kind of topics would you like to see discussed?
I believe the new Plurk Karma ALGO has several flaws that turn the site against the general idea of social networking. I’ll explain my thoughts on this during the coming week, but in the meantime you can catch a discussion going on here.
